Matt Nathanson Releases Songs In The (M)Attic, A Billy Joel Covers EP
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 17, 2026) — Multi-platinum-selling singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson has released his new covers EP, Songs In The (M)Attic, out today (April 17) via Acrobat Records in partnership with Many Hats Distribution. The EP pays tribute to one of his earliest and most enduring influences, Billy Joel.
The EP finds Nathanson revisiting a catalog that helped shape his musical identity, reinterpreting Joel’s iconic songwriting through his own lens of confessional lyricism and stripped-down pop-rock. The title nods to Joel’s 1981 live album Songs In The Attic, while playfully stamping Nathanson’s name into the legacy.
The first single released from the project, Nathanson’s version of “Uptown Girl,” offers a fresh take on the classic, trading polished nostalgia for a more intimate rendition that highlights the emotional core of the song.
“I didn’t realize how much of my musical DNA was shaped by Billy Joel until I watched the HBO documentary on him,” Nathanson says. “As I started unpacking my favorite songs of his, I saw how much I’d unconsciously tried to emulate both his writing and his band dynamic. It was a quiet takeover. I’ve never had to ‘learn to love’ Billy Joel the way I have with Springsteen, Dylan, or Joni. I’ve just always loved it. Full stop.”
Songs In The (M)Attic arrives during a full-circle moment for Nathanson. On March 12, he performed at a sold-out tribute to Joel at Carnegie Hall along with a room full of his peers including Rob Thomas, Natalie Merchant, and Andrew McMahon among others, celebrating the legacy of one of pop music’s most influential songwriters. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the tribute, Nathanson says he would have “walked across a fucking desert then swam a fucking ocean” to honor Joel.
Reviewing the performance, Andy Greene, Senior Writer at Rolling Stone, wrote: “...Nathanson got the crowd more fired up than anyone else by playing an achingly tender, solo acoustic rendition of ‘I Got To Extremes,’ and then followed it with a bombastic take on ‘Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)’ that had the entire room joining in.”
Over more than three decades, Nathanson has built one of modern pop-rock’s most enduring careers, anchored by his RIAA Platinum hit “Come On Get Higher” and a catalog that has generated over 2.27 billion streams worldwide. Known for pairing deeply personal songwriting with anthemic hooks, his live performances blur the line between concert and conversation, creating a uniquely intimate connection with audiences.
This summer, Nathanson will join Train and Barenaked Ladies on a 36-date North American amphitheater tour.
