After the Fight (SPEAK Remix) -
SPEAK was introduced to me by Andre Anjos (RAC), and I found their music so creative and melodic. In turn, SPEAK really enjoyed the Inland project and in particular jumped at the chance to remix "After the Fight". The result is jarring and wonderfully chaotic!
Loneliness & Alchohol (JT Daly Remix) -
I've been a fan of Paper Route for years, and was so excited to have JT do a remix for us. He picked this song, and really re-invented the chorus, adding his own vocals and speeding them up. It's something we never would have tried, but works so well.
Inland (Five Knives Remix) -
Nathan's been a friend of years, and actually co-wrote this title track for "Inland". He's a genius genre-bender, and put a unexpected turn on this song for us. His electro-punk "Five Knives" project is a blast.
Pennsylvania (Careful What You Remix by Flibbityflu) -
Flibbityflu is Stephen Mason's (of Jars) remix moniker. He has done a handful of remixes these past few years, and really throws himself into re-arranging tracks that he had a big hand in writing and creating from day 1. He's our guitarist, but has such a great ear with programming an keys, so you never know where he'll take something.
Age of Immature Mistakes (Kyle Rictor Remix) -
Kyle was on tour with us, playing guitar for Brooke Waggoner. He heard us talking about the remixes and asked if he could take a crack at one. I love the heart and whimsy in this remix, and am honored to have his interpretation of this energetic song.
Human Race (Eric Sharp Remix) -
Eric is a friend of a friend, and found himself drawn to this song, which I had hoped that someone would remix for us. Again, really unexpected and wonderful to hear a song in such a new skin. It's almost like recognizing a different language you didn't know you could understand.
Reckless Forgiver (Charlie Lowell Remix) -
This has been one of my favorite tracks on "Inland" since we started the record, and no one had taken it yet to remix, so I just started working on it for fun. I really enjoyed imagining a new skin around the lyric.
Jars of Clay released its 11th full-length studio album, Inland, on August 27th 2013. Inland was recorded in Portland with producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Beth Orton, The Decemberists) at his studio, Flora. The original tracks on Inland feature Matt Chamberlain (Springsteen, Tori Amos, Wallflowers) on drums, with Adrian Belew (Talking Heads, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Nine Inch Nails) on guitar. The album was cut live, straight to analogue tape, with several songs captured in one take.
Fast forward to 2014 and enter Inlandia, a seven-song remix album that shatters any preconceived notions surrounding a Jars of Clay album. Jars of Clay keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Charlie Lowell was a driving force behind the concept of a remix album, “I love the culture that surrounds a record - the birthing of the original tracks, the stems and resulting remixes that collide with different genres and energies. They can be horrible and they can be brilliant, but it's all interesting nonetheless. I am increasingly enjoying the web blog/remix culture online and found myself imagining this most recent Jars record, Inland, being remixed. I made contact with a few friends and reached out and found some interest. What was intended to be a three-song remix EP quickly turned into a seven-song project.”
Inlandia will be released March 4th on Gray Matters.
